Master Thesis Crop and microclimate modelling in Agri voltaic systems

Job Description

Background:

OX2 is a large pan-European developer of renewable energy systems within wind, PV, and battery storage. The company's core ambition is to support a large-scale transition to renewable energy. OX2's project pipeline includes a substantial portfolio of AgriPV projects across multiple markets. As the need for large volumes of cost-efficient renewable electricity grows, finding a balance between electricity generation and sustainable agriculture production becomes crucial.

Assignment:

OX2 is looking for two master thesis students to work on crop and microclimate modelling in Agri voltaic systems. The aim is to optimize the generation of electricity from PV systems while ensuring sustainable agriculture production. The work will involve modelling the impact of shading caused by PV systems on crops and microclimate. The assignment includes:

  • Selecting and integrating crop growth models with OX2's shade model.
  • Simulating crop response and microclimate conditions under AgriPV systems.
  • Developing a model for microclimate variation on the ground based on input from the crop growth models.

Thesis 1:

**Crop growth models:**

  • Select the most appropriate crop model to combine with OX2's shade model.
  • Choose target crops and weather data for model input.
  • Develop a Python model that simulates crop cycle.
  • Compare the output of different crop growth models.
  • Evaluate usability and integration with OX2's shade model.
  • Output results in Excel format.

Thesis 2:

**Microclimate modelling:**

  • Develop a model for simulating microclimate variation based on input from Thesis 1 and OX2 shade model.
  • Utilize radiation distribution, PV configuration, and crop parameters for the model.
  • Integrate the crop growth model with OX2's shade model.
  • Package the simulation into one tool for calculating crop cycle dependent on microclimate conditions.
  • Output final results in Excel files with analysis.

Requirements:

  • Coding experience in Python.
  • Ability to work on model setup, input-output parameters, and format.
  • Familiarity with advanced models for developing a simplified model.

How to Apply:

If you are interested in contributing to the transition to clean energy and have the necessary skills, apply for this master thesis opportunity at OX2.
