Principal Project Engineer – West Virginia Facility

Boston Metal is commercializing cutting edge technology that will revolutionize primary metals production. This fast-paced startup company is looking for a Principal Project Engineer to facilitate the development of a new facility in Weirton, WV to manufacture ultrapure chromium metal and high temperature alloys.

Main job duties will include technical management of this large scale ($100M+) industrial metallurgical project, including managing relationships with engineering design companies (EPCs) and industrial partners, and creating of technical design documentation packages. The candidate will also be required to work with external vendors for equipment and part procurement.

Occasional job duties may include creating process design documentation, prepare budget estimates, and leading design reviews.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform technical management and commissioning of this large scale ($100M+) industrial metallurgical project.
  • Collect project technical requirements and communicate the project design basis to engineering design companies and industrial partners.
  • Act as the point of contact and communicate project status to all relevant stakeholders.
  • Analyze project progress and, when necessary, facilitate discussion to adapt scope, timelines, and costs to achieve maximum benefit.
  • Participate in design meetings, capturing impact to the overall program goals, and reporting outcomes to the appropriate stakeholders as needed.
  • Assist in assigning project tasks to relevant parties and facilitate a process for status updates.
  • Develop and maintain project performance dashboards that track overall progress and the accomplishment of specific milestones.
  • Help prepare project budgets, CAPEX and OPEX estimates, and resource requirements.

Required Qualifications:

  • 15+ years working with and leading large scale capital projects
  • M.S. in Chemical, Mechanical, Systems, Process, Metallurgy or Materials Science.
  • 5+ years’ experience preparing specifications and design basis for RFP and RFQ
  • 5+ years technical project leadership experience and relationship management with large industrial partners
  • Experience in commissioning phases of large engineering projects.
  • Professional written and verbal communication, interpersonal and organizational skills are vital
  • Great problem-solving skills and the ability to facilitate decision making
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Experience working with metals, especially at high temperatures
  • Experience working in a startup-like environment

Desired Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of technical project management experience (PMP a plus).
  • Financial analysis and budgeting experience.
  • Experience using Microsoft Project and Visio and cloud solutions such as QuickBase or Asana

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee has potential for exposure to hazardous chemicals and/or hazardous waste, and occasional exposure to moving equipment, the risks of which are minimized through compliance with established use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety policies and procedures. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
