Jane Goodall Institute: Roots & Shoots Basecamp Coordinator - Chicago
**Location:** Remote, Chicago, Illinois, United States **Rate:** $45 per hour
Job Description
The Jane Goodall Institute is seeking a basecamp coordinator to facilitate Roots & Shoots program activity and expansion in Chicago, IL.
Background
Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots is the global youth program of the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI). Established in 1991, Roots & Shoots is active in 66 countries, with hundreds of thousands of young people inspired by Dr. Jane Goodall to make the world a better place for our communities, animals, and the environment. The Roots & Shoots changemakers identify problems in their communities and take action through service projects and youth-led campaigns, building on Dr. Goodall's belief in empowering young people to create practical solutions to big challenges.
Primary Responsibilities
- Build relationships, recruit and leverage volunteers, and engage donors, youth leaders, and local organizations to energize, encourage, and celebrate Roots & Shoots participants.
- Provide overall organization and structure for the grassroots participant-driven program.
- Coordinate volunteer support, recruit experienced educators, mentors, and group leaders for a local Roots & Shoots Council.
- Support adult leader recruitment and relationship management.
- Establish and maintain institutional relationships with local organizations.
- Orchestrate in-person and virtual celebrations for Roots & Shoots participants.
- Recruit and support the Roots & Shoots youth council through educator relationships and institutional affiliations.
- Oversee a budget for Roots & Shoots Project Grants to support local educators and youth council members.
Job Requirements
Qualifications
- Nonprofit program coordination/management experience.
- Classroom teaching, after-school/summer program leadership, informal education coordination, youth leadership, community organization, volunteer coordination, and event management are desirable.
Terms
- Reports to Director, Roots & Shoots Network.
- 15-20 hours/week contract position.
- Six-month renewable contract paid at $45/hour.
- Work from home or from office space provided by a partner organization.
- Regular travel in the greater Chicagoland area for meetings and events.
- Mileage reimbursed at current government rate.
- 1-3 trips per year to Washington D.C. or other U.S. sites.
