BWXT is currently seeking a NDE Development Engineer for its Lynchburg Technology Campus (LTC) in Virginia!

The Non-Destructive Evaluation and Inspection Systems (NDE&IS) group at BWXT researches, develops, and builds custom non-destructive inspection systems for both internal and external customers.  These non-destructive evaluation (NDE) systems are mostly based on ultrasonic testing but can involve electromagnetic (i.e. eddy current) testing or vision systems.

Having a history of developing electromagnetic NDE devices, we are currently also involved in developing induction heating systems.  The NDE&IS group is comprised of 12 staff members that provide physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, and build up capabilities.  NDE&IS maintains extensive capabilities for modeling ultrasonic wave propagation, ultrasonic inspections, and eddy current inspections. NDE&IS also has enterprise level finite element modeling (FEM) capability for electromagnetics, thermal, and stress analysis.  To further support the buildup of these systems NDE&IS has full electrical, electronics, and printed circuit board development capabilities that includes simulating analog circuitry, digital circuitry, and working with the smallest components available.

NDE&IS is seeking an experienced Non-Destructive Evaluation Development Engineer to join our group of engineers and technicians to support the research and development of these systems. If you are looking for a career where your experience is valued, innovative thinking is fostered, and barrier-free teamwork is embraced every day, then this opportunity is for you.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assess candidate non-destructive evaluation needs and develop design concepts for custom system development to meet those needs.
  • Work with potential customers to prepare and submit cost proposals for the development of custom systems.
  • Design and model ultrasonic inspection tests and testing systems.
  • Design other NDE tests supported by analysis and numerical modeling to optimize and verify the design.
  • Perform NDE system design including specifying subsystem components such as scanners, NDE instruments, data acquisition instruments, and software development.
  • Conduct system verification testing of an inspection method or system.  Design and implement modifications to the inspection or testing system as needed to obtain the correct results.
  • Design electromagnetic devices such as eddy current coils, magnetic devices, and induction heating coils.
  • Design and develop custom analog and digital circuits for use in these systems.

Job qualifications/Requirements:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics or Engineering with courses in electromagnetics, analog/digital electronics design, wave propagation, thermodynamics, and mathematics.
  • At least (4) years of related experience with emphasis on ultrasonic testing is required.
  • Candidates with experience using CIVA for simulating ultrasonic and eddy current inspections is a plus.
  • Candidates able to use electronic CAD packages and electronics simulation software is a plus.
  • Candidates with experience using ANSYS FEM packages to simulate electromagnetic and thermal device operation is a plus.  Experience with combined physics modeling such as electromagnetic and thermal is a plus.
  • Having some proficiency in programming in LabVIEW, C++, C#, C, or similar programming languages is a plus.
  • The candidate should be a self-starter, capable of working as part of a team, and occasionally independently.
  • The candidate should have good oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance.

Benefits:

  • This position will work a 9/80 schedule
  • Market leading salary
  • Paid time off
  • Paid holidays and winter holiday shutdown
  • Tuition Assistance
  • Medical, dental, vision and service-based retirement contributions with additional 401k match.
