Job Purpose

The ADMS Control Room Engineer will be accountable for the day-to-day maintenance and support of the Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) Distribution SCADA system and required data interfaces. The selected candidate for this role will become a key resource required to work in parallel with the wider grid modernization organization to ensure consistency between developing technologies and ADMS requirements. The ADMS will leverage data from an exponentially increasing number of field devices and supports the widespread enablement of distribution automation, volt-var optimization, fault location, and the broader utilization of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). As the ADMS Control Room Engineer, you will play a key role in the day-to-day operation of system applications such as Fault Location Isolation and Service Restoration (FLISR), Voltage Var Optimization (VVO), and Volt Var Control (VVC), Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR). Other supporting systems in scope will be Outage Management System (OMS), DSCADA, and Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS). This role will also support interface support and GIS Feeder Modeling support and require that you understand the procedures and expected system performance associated with the introduction of new application integration technologies.

Key Accountabilities

Position Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Support Control Center operations and use of ADMS applications
  • Continuous improvement in tuning the system to expand ADMS coverage and provide the most accurate results possible
  • Provide engineering and technical support to the Control Centers for the safe, economic, and reliable operation of the electric generation transmission and substation system
  • Analyze and report malfunctions or problems associated with the ADMS DSCADA system
  • Promote and implement procedural best practices and ongoing process improvement to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the system outage coordination process
  • Interface with various divisions and departments in resolving and tracking the progress of resolutions to operating problems in support of reliable system operation
  • Provide technical support to the Control Centers in the resolution of system failures and equipment problems to ensure reliable system performance
  • Perform system and operating studies as required for planned work and for real-time operations to support peak load and other unique system configurations assuring reliable operation
  • Support Operator training
  • Develop and maintain systems designs, specifications, standards, models, and procedures to support design solutions and enhance safety, efficiency, and operability and support local decision-making
  • Build and nurture relationships with industry peers and other external industry influencers to keep abreast of technical innovations and their potential benefits
  • Attend industry-related conferences and events
  • Practice and demonstrate the ability to create new concepts or solutions that are not always obvious to others
  • May be required to provide off-hour and severe weather support

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science is strongly preferred
  • 5 years of relevant experience in troubleshooting and/or operation of 3-phase electric systems
  • Knowledge of electrical distribution circuit maps and hierarchy of electrical distribution circuits
  • Knowledge of distribution system planning operations including power flow and load analysis, voltage quality, and fault analysis
  • Understanding of alternative energy sources (PV and Wind) and their effect on the distribution grid
  • Well-versed in the operations of computers and database management
  • Experience creating new ways to plan and operate the electric supply and distribution systems using advanced analytics and emerging technologies and industry trends
  • Requires deep understanding of the opportunities for National Grid inherent in emerging technologies.
