Associate Director, California Data Science

**TITLE:** Associate Director, California River Restoration and Data Science **CLASSIFICATION:** Associate Director I **DEPARTMENT:** Conservation **WAGE CATEGORY:** Exempt or Non-exempt **REPORTS TO:** Director, California River Restoration and Dam Removal **LOCATION:** Nevada City, CA, Sacramento, CA, or home office within 2-3 hour drive from Redding, CA

**JOB SUMMARY** The Associate Director of California River Restoration and Data Science will help American Rivers compile and analyze watershed and species data to evaluate the most pressing climate challenges our rivers face. The Associate Director will contribute to the development and implementation of projects that support science-based decision-making for species recovery, California water policy, and dam removal project assessment. This role involves coordinating with state agencies, conducting monitoring and study plans, and supporting dam removal projects.

**PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES**

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to accelerate river restoration and improve watershed management policies in California.
  • Develop fish and watershed study design and monitoring plans.
  • Collect and analyze data on salmonid populations and water quantity/quality conditions.
  • Manage a database of priority dam removal projects.
  • Assist with data analysis and technical report writing.
  • Contribute to fundraising, strategic planning, and DEIJ initiatives.
  • Conduct outreach activities and media development.

**QUALIFICATIONS**

  • Experience with R programming language and managing databases.
  • Knowledge of habitat assessment studies and California water resource issues.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to develop partnerships, proposals, and strategies for river conservation.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and a minimum of two years of work experience.
