NESO is an independent and expert whole energy organization on a mission to accelerate our energy transition.

The Resilience and Emergency Management (REM) role will be a significant and core activity within NESO, focusing on understanding and planning system resilience across electricity and gas, and the interactions between them. The key purpose will be to provide whole system coordination and analysis, delivering independent expert advice and information to government and the regulator, alongside strategic coordination and preparation for emergencies across energy vectors.

Deliverables of this role are intended to be scaled up over time, and successful candidates will help shape what the Resilience and Emergency Management Directorate will deliver. Within REM, a hub of technical expertise with deep knowledge across energy vectors is sought to support across REM activities, ensuring robust technical underpinning, competence, and contribution to the function's thought leadership and key outputs delivery.

The transformation to NESO will include changes to the organization's position in the industry and interactions with government, the regulator, and wider industry participants. Building specific technical expertise will be critical to demonstrating NESO's capability and credibility as an independent expert organization, delivering a function that doesn't exist today.

This role can be based in Wokingham, Warwick, or Glasgow, and offers hybrid working from office and home on a full-time or part-time basis with flexible working arrangements.

As Great Britain's electricity system operator ESO, we balance electricity supply and demand in real-time using our engineering and commercial expertise. Our role is integral to keeping the electricity flowing where it's needed second by second.

We are becoming the National Energy System Operator (NESO), with additional roles and responsibilities, to drive progress towards net zero while maintaining energy security and minimizing costs for consumers. The transformation to NESO includes operational independence from the government, regulatory oversight by Ofgem, and anticipated launch by 2024.

Key Accountabilities:

• Support the delivery of key REM initiatives through deep technical subject matter expertise in the UK Gas sector.
• Act as a subject matter lead across REM in Gas interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
• Translate gas expertise into critical questions and problem-solving across the whole energy sector.
• Upskill existing ESO teams in energy resilience with a whole energy system approach.

About you:

We are seeking experts in the energy sector with:

• Deep subject matter expertise in a specific area or capability within the energy sector.
• Ability to channel knowledge and expertise into project goals.
• Understanding of gas distribution network assets, terminals, operations, and emergency response activities.
