Purpose:

The Sensors and Embedded Systems Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applications for a postdoctoral research associate with expertise in process monitoring and control methods to support automation of complex systems. The ideal candidate has experience with (a) simulation of physico-chemical systems, (b) the selection and use of high-frequency data streams for process monitoring, and (c) practical validation of advanced control methods.

The chosen candidate is expected to perform research that expands the state-of-the-art for data- and physics-based models for process supervision in a diverse range of applications, including electrical grid monitoring, additive manufacturing, and water treatment. The chosen candidate is expected to publish the results of their research. Representative activities include:

  • The development and implementation of algorithms and software tools for adaptive online process model identification (i.e., digital twin technologies)
  • Use of high-frequency data for process monitoring and diagnosis
  • Collaboration with other ORNL researchers to test the developed methods at industrially relevant scales

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implementation and evaluation of data-intensive models and algorithms for supervision and optimization of complex system.
  • Present and report research results in high-impact peer reviewed journals, conferences, and program reviews
  • Develop long-term research strategies aligned with monitoring and automation capabilities and opportunities within ORNL.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in civil engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline completed in the last five years.
  • Hands-on experience with machine learning, process modelling, and industrial data acquisition systems is very valuable.

This position may also require access to technology and information that is subject to export control requirements and potentially classified information.

Special Requirements:

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension of up to 12 months. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
